A workplace assessment helps injured workers return to work safely while reducing the chance of re-injury. In this video, AusRehab explains how workplace assessments support return-to-work planning, risk management, and ergonomic safety under the NSW workers compensation scheme.

What is a workplace assessment? Workplace assessments are a key part of the workers’s compensation process in identifying suitable duties and a safe pathway back to [music] full pre-injjury duties. This assessment forms the foundation of a safe and durable return to work. The aim of a workplace assessment is three-fold. One, to fully understand the environmental conditions and the physical demands of the workers’s role. Two, to determine how much capacity the worker currently has to perform these
00:00:28
tasks. and three to identify graduated suitable duties that can support their recovery at work. What happens during a workplace assessment? During the assessment, a qualified professional visits the worker’s job site to review their pre-injury duties. All details of their pre-injury job demands will be recorded, including their working hours, the work environment, required equipment, and relevant certifications. A job task analysis is then conducted. It is an integral part of the
00:00:55
workplace assessment which involves evaluating the physical demands of each task through on-site observation and self-reports. The worker’s current capacity is assessed and compared against findings from the job task analysis. If the worker is not yet fit to resume their pre-injury duties, the assessor will discuss with the employer and recommend suitable duties or adjustments based on the worker’s injury and current capacity. For example, if the original role involved lifting 10 kilo boxes

and a worker has a shoulder injury, a temporary switch to an administrative role might be appropriate. A detailed report will be provided within five business days documenting all details of the job demands, the relevance to the injury, and recommendations for suitable duties. The report provides a wealth of information to all parties involved in the [music] workers’s compensation claim and serves as a foundation for the recover at work plan. How does a workplace assessment support my workers’s

compensation claim? The workplace assessment is a mandatory step for the rehabilitation provider within the workers’s compensation scheme and takes approximately 1 hour to complete for standard jobs. This is often conducted alongside the [music] initial rehabilitation needs assessment to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the workers’s medical history and injury related limitations. If the worker’s role is office-based, an ergonomic assessment is also included to ensure the workstation setup supports

the workers’s recovery. As recovery progresses and a worker’s capacity improves, a workplace review will take place every 3 months after the first assessment [music] in a form of a workplace visit or meeting. These regular reviews monitor how well the worker is coping with the current duties, provide an opportunity to address any concerns that may have arisen, and help identify additional suitable duties to enable a gradual and safe return to their pre-injjury role.
