How We Support You – The Rehabilitation Journey

At AusRehab, we keep things simple. We break the workplace rehabilitation process in NSW into four clear stages so you know what’s happening and why. You’re involved at every step, and we never make decisions without your input.

Initial Interview

Our process begins with an initial needs assessment. This is a one-on-one meeting with your dedicated rehabilitation consultant, who will:

  • Understand your injury and treatment status
  • Identify your goals for recovery and work
  • Review your current work capacity
  • Discuss any barriers to returning to work

This assessment sets the foundation for a safe, realistic, and empowering recovery plan.

Coordination With Your Doctor

Your treating GP or specialist is a key partner in your recovery. As part of the workplace rehabilitation process, we maintain open communication with your doctor and employer to ensure your return-to-work plan is medically appropriate.

Our team works directly with your workplace rehabilitation doctor to align medical advice with your work goals, capacity, and support needs.

Rehabilitation Program

Your plan may involve a recover-at-work plan with your existing employer, or a return-to-work plan with a new employer. Each plan includes:

  • Suitable duties in NSW that match your current abilities
  • Options for modified duties in NSW or alternate roles
  • A graded RTW plan to help you build back to pre-injury hours and tasks
  • Coordination between all parties to keep your plan on track

You are always involved in decision-making and updates throughout your program.

Case Finalisation

Once you’ve met your recovery goals or achieved a stable return to work, your case is formally closed. This stage includes:

  • Final review of your graded RTW plan
  • Exit planning to ensure sustained progress
  • A short follow-up period to confirm success

You’ll leave the program with more confidence, clarity, and independence than when you entered.

Steps to Manage Your Injury

Not sure what to do if you’re injured at work? This quick guide outlines the key steps to protect your health and access your entitlements under the NSW workers’ compensation system.

See Your Doctor

As soon as possible after the incident, see your preferred GP (you’re not required to go to a company-appointed doctor). A WorkCover-approved doctor can provide a Certificate of Capacity, which outlines what you can do at work, what support you’ll need, and whether time off is required.

This certificate plays a central role in your treatment and work injury compensation. It should be updated regularly throughout your recovery. Click here to learn how to get a certificate of capacity.

Report the Injury to Your Employer

It’s crucial to report a work injury in NSW to your employer as soon as it happens, or as soon as you become aware of it. Delayed reporting can lead to complications in your workers’ compensation claim.

Timely reporting allows you to access early treatment, income support, and workplace adjustments to help you recover and stay at work when possible.

Submit a Workers' Compensation Claim

Lodging a workers’ compensation claim in NSW activates your entitlements. You can do this through your employer or directly with the insurer. Include:

– A completed claim form

– Your Certificate of Capacity

– Any medical receipts or supporting evidence

This step gives you access to weekly payments, treatment, and rehabilitation support. Be sure to track all correspondence with the insurer and keep a copy of everything you submit.

Your Right to Choose Your Own Rehabilitation Provider

As an injured worker, you have the legal right to choose your own rehabilitation provider in NSW. Insurers or employers may suggest providers, but you are not required to use them.

At AusRehab, we are fully independent and act in your best interests. Choosing a provider like us ensures your recovery stays focused on your needs, not the insurer’s bottom line.

You can make a referral today by filling out this form.

Participate in Your Return to Work (RTW) Plan

A Return to Work (RTW) Plan is a practical, goal-focused plan designed to help injured workers safely return to work following a workplace injury. As a workplace rehabilitation provider, AusRehab develops and coordinates RTW Plans in collaboration with you, your treating doctor, employer, and insurer. The plan outlines:

– Suitable duties and work hours

– Graduated upgrades based on your capacity

– Rehabilitation services required

– Clear return-to-work goals and timeframes

We ensure you remain actively involved at every stage and that the plan reflects your physical, psychological, and vocational need.

– If you are returning to the same employer, this may be called a Recover at Work Plan.

– If you are returning to a new employer, a Return to Work Plan is used.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I’m injured at work in NSW?

Start by seeing your GP or a WorkCover doctor to get a Certificate of Capacity. Next, report the work injury to your employer in writing. Then, submit a workers’ compensation claim to the insurer. Keep copies of all documents and remember: you can choose your own workplace rehabilitation provider in NSW.

Can I choose my own workplace rehabilitation provider in NSW?

Yes. Under the NSW workers’ compensation law, you have the right to choose your own rehabilitation provider. You are not obligated to use the one recommended by your employer or insurer. Choosing an independent, SIRA-accredited rehabilitation provider like AusRehab ensures your recovery stays focused on your needs.

What is a workplace rehabilitation provider, how they help?

A workplace rehabilitation provider in NSW is an independent service that helps injured workers return to suitable, safe employment. Providers like AusRehab coordinate treatment, speak with your doctor and employer, and create tailored return-to-work plans that support your health and long-term recovery.

Who can refer me to a workplace rehabilitation provider?

You can be referred by your treating doctor, employer, insurer, or you can refer yourself. If you’d prefer to work with AusRehab, you can make a referral here.

What is a recover-at-work plan in NSW?

A recover-at-work plan outlines the duties, hours, and supports you’ll need to safely stay at work while recovering from an injury. It’s used when returning to the same employer and includes suitable duties and adjustments based on your current capacity.

How does workplace rehabilitation help injured workers recover?

Workplace rehabilitation helps injured workers by coordinating medical advice, planning suitable duties, and ensuring the return to work is safe and realistic. Providers also offer emotional support during recovery, liaise with insurers, and help prevent re-injury or setbacks. To learn more, read our blogs about The Role of Workplace Rehabilitation Providers and How Your Rehab Provider Helps You Get Back to Work.

What is an Initial Needs Assessment and why is it important?

An Initial Needs Assessment is your first meeting with a rehabilitation consultant. It helps identify your goals, current health, work capacity, and barriers to returning to work. This step ensures your support plan is personalised and based on what’s truly right for you.

What happens if my employer cannot offer suitable duties?

If suitable duties in NSW aren’t available with your current employer, we’ll explore other options. This may include helping you access vocational assessments, job-seeking support, and work trial opportunities with new employers.

What support is available if I cannot return to my previous job?

AusRehab offers full support for different employer return-to-work pathways. This includes vocational counselling, job readiness, resume and interview coaching, and retraining after workplace injury if needed. We’ll help you find safe, meaningful work that matches your skills.

How long does it take to return to work after a workplace injury?

It varies based on your injury, treatment, and capacity. Some workers return quickly to modified duties, while others need more time. We develop a graded return-to-work plan that suits your recovery speed and adjust it as needed.

How does AusRehab support my emotional well-being during recovery?

We offer emotional support during recovery, helping you manage stress, anxiety, or uncertainty about the future. Our team takes time to understand your needs and refers you to mental health support services if appropriate. You’re never treated like just a case file.

Can I change my current rehabilitation provider in NSW?

Yes, you can. If you’re unhappy with your current provider or don’t feel supported, you have the right to switch. Contact your insurer and request a new referral, or choose AusRehab here for personalised, ethical support.

What is a Return to Work (RTW) Plan?

A Return to Work (RTW) Plan is developed to support an injured worker’s safe and gradual return to work following a workplace injury.

It is prepared by a workplace rehabilitation provider in collaboration with you, your treating doctor, employer, and insurer. The plan outlines suitable duties, work hours, and any rehabilitation services required to help you recover and achieve your return-to-work goals.

Do I need a Certificate of Capacity to lodge a claim?

Yes. A valid Certificate of Capacity from a WorkCover doctor is required to lodge a workers’ compensation claim in NSW. It outlines your injury, diagnosis, and your ability to work, forming the basis for your entitlements.

How can I make a referral to AusRehab?

You can make a referral online using this form, or contact us directly. We accept referrals from workers, GPs, employers, and insurers. There’s no cost to you if your claim is accepted by the insurer.

Who do I contact if I need help with my workers' compensation claim?

If you’re having trouble with your workers’ compensation claim in NSW, we recommend contacting your case manager at the insurer first. If you need independent advice or feel you’re not being treated fairly, reach out to AusRehab or your union for support. You can also contact the NSW Workers Compensation Independent Review Office (IRO) for assistance.
